NSW: Top cop hits back at Cabramatta naysayers.
The senior policeman charged with cleansing Australia's heroin capital has hit back
at claims his blueprint for Cabramatta is a one-hit wonder.
New South Wales Assistant Commissioner CLIVE SMALL says he's not claiming he can solve
the problem by making drugs go away.
But he says he'll make life a lot better than it has been for residents of the western
Sydney suburb.
Mr SMALL inherited responsibility for the drug-addled area last month and he's hoping
his critics will cut him a bit of slack.
The former Crime Agencies commander launched a seven-point plan targeting both drug
pushers and users last week, with the first wave of arrests made yesterday.
However, an overnight drive-by shooting has sparked predictions that a renewed police
presence in the area will achieve little.
Mr SMALL has promised his officers will reduce the visible face of the drug scourge
in Cabramatta and its consequences.
He says they'll be working to make the area safe and clean.
One hundred police arrested 22 people yesterday, laying 33 charges for theft and drug-related
matters.
Another man involved in a high-speed chase in which two people suffered serious injuries
was himself released from hospital and also likely to be charged with up to 10 armed robberies.
