MSW: Police officers angry over station closures
Angry police and residents will hold a meeting next week over Commissioner PETER RYAN'S
plans to amalgamate nine police stations in Sydney's CBD and eastern suburbs.
Police Association Redfern branch administrator CRAIG LEONARD says of particular concern
is the lack of consultation with the police union and the community to the plan, which
is being piloted in the city and eastern suburbs.
He says 300 community members and police plan to hold a community meeting next Monday
at South Sydney Leagues Club in Redfern to express their anger at reduced police service
in the area.
Mr LEONARD says officers who specialise in working with Aboriginal communities and
those who deal regularly with gay and lesbian issues are worried the amalgamation may
reduce the ability of police to support and protect vulnerable members of the community.
The community meeting on Monday starts at 11am.
