FED:PM sends message of support to Stynes
MELBOURNE, Aug 6 AAP - Prime Minister Julia Gillard has sent a message of support to
gravely ill Melbourne Football Club president Jim Stynes as he continues to battle cancer.
Stynes, 45, was back at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre on Wednesday for further
tests on his stomach tumour.
Ms Gillard said she had been privileged to meet with Stynes and discuss his work with
young and disadvantaged Australians.
"I think we're all thinking about Jim," she told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday.
"He was a tremendous footballer. He's a great Australian and a person of remarkable
courage ... to keep coming out, being there with his beloved football team and doing so
much great work amongst the Australian community.
"Our thoughts are certainly with him and his family."
Doctors have urged Stynes to quit his role as Melbourne Football Club president and
concentrate entirely on his fight against cancer.
When Stynes addressed the media on Monday to announce coach Dean Bailey's sacking he
appeared frail and slow on his feet, admitting his health fight had not been easy in recent
weeks.
In June, he endured his fifth operation to remove cancerous tumours from his brain.

NSW: Police warn of strike action if pay demand not me
SYDNEY, Dec 8 AAP - NSW police warn they will consider industrial action if the state
government doesn't double its 2.5 per cent wage increase offer.
The Police Association of NSW president Bob Pritchard said the government risked losing
more officers if it couldn't match the current inflation rate, which is about 5 per cent.
"The government has come out with a 2.5 per cent offer - that's not only ridiculous,
it's an insult to all police out on the front line," Mr Pritchard told reporters on Monday.
He said more than 1,200 police officers had left the NSW Police Force since the last
state election in March 2007, with many citing low wages and poor conditions as the reason
behind their move.
"We're trying to attract police into this job - good professional people," Mr Pritchard said.
"The government will not be able to sustain the police force if they don't pay decent wages."
Mr Pritchard said he would not rule out industrial action if the government did not
come to the table "in good faith".
"We will take industrial action if necessary," he said.
Mr Pritchard said he couldn't detail what form of action the police union would pursue,
but was adamant it "certainly wouldn't be action that could affect the community".
"We're out there to provide protection for the community. We wouldn't change that in any way."

Fed: Literacy and numeracy levels foundation for learning: Govt
CANBERRA, Feb 11 AAP - Literacy and numeracy must be encouraged as early as possible
in life to form the basis of all other learning, federal Education Minister Julia Gillard
says.
A new study by Australian National University economists suggests today's 14-year-olds,
in learning terms, are about three months behind their counterparts from the 1960s.
The researchers suggest the recent focus of creating smaller classes, at the expense
of paying more for better teachers, could be to blame.
Ms Gillard says the government is preparing a national action plan for numeracy and
literacy to address the shortfall.
It will include a national assessment program in which about one million students will be tested.
"We've got to make sure that children leave school literate and numerate," Ms Gillard
told ABC Radio today.
"We've got to make sure that literacy and numeracy is formed as early as possible in
life because it's a foundation stone for all other learning."
Meanwhile, the Australian Education Union says extra money for teachers could play
a role in improving education levels.
"A competitive professional salary to attract and retain the best teachers in our system
is absolutely necessary," federal president Angelo Gavrielatos told ABC Radio.
He said the teacher shortage was becoming more serious right around Australia and improving
pay could attract more talented individuals to the profession.
"I am yet to meet a teacher who enters the classroom with any intention other than
to improve the educational outcome of students."
Report co-author Andrew Lee agrees.
"One possible theory is the spending was misdirected," he told ABC Radio.
"We spent a lot of money getting smaller classes in Australian schools and in the process
we let teachers' salaries stagnate - maybe that was a bad decision in retrospect."

FED: Howard derides Keating's failure with China
SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has scoffed at Paul Keating's inability
to fully engage with China during his time as Australia's leader.
The former prime minister and architect of APEC has called for the group to be revamped
into a strategic body, rather than an economic one, to accommodate the rise of China as
a major new power.
Mr Keating has told Fairfax newspapers the APEC summit is well suited to easing China
into the world as it brings together leaders of half the world's economy and population,
including US President George Bush.
But Mr Howard told reporters in western Sydney today that Mr Keating had not had even
a fraction of the success of the present government in engaging with China.
"I can remember Mr Keating telling me what a great thing APEC was," he said.
"I would have thought including China in the world community has been one of the great
foreign policy successes of my government.
"I seem to remember Mr Keating and his mob saying the Chinese wouldn't talk to us.
"One of the features of my prime ministership has been the close relationship with
the US and at the same time the very close relationship with China," he said.
Mr Keating will be making a speech on APEC in Sydney tonight.
This year's APEC leaders' week runs from September 2 to 9 in Sydney.

NSW: Interest rate rises led to negative economic growth: Iemma
SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - NSW Premier Morris Iemma blames interest rate rises for the state's
shrinking economy.
He said yesterday's national account figures revealing the NSW economy has shrunk by
0.3 per cent in the third quarter of the year were due to the federal government's inability
to manage inflation.
"The growth figures of yesterday are all down to interest rates," Mr Iemma said.
"Three interest rate rises this year, with the speculation of further ones, that's
what it's down to."
Mr Iemma said the national economy had slowed as a result of federal Treasurer Peter
Costello and Prime Minister John Howard's inability to control inflation, leading to an
increase in interest rates.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma said the meeting was held in a spirit of cooperation and goodwill,
and significant agreement was reached on a renewed national effort for economic reform.
He said in the area of mental health there was at long last hope for the mentally ill
and their families, with a commitment to develop a new national action plan within the
next three months.
"In the area of health we have made significant progress on tackling some of the blockages
in our health system," he said.
That includes a plan to establish a national call centre linking various services in
a bid to ease pressure on hospital emergency departments.
"These are significant agreements that will in the long term provide for sustained
improvement in the quality of services in our hospitals as well as out in the community,"
he said.
Victorian Premier Steve Bracks said this day would go down as the day premiers grasped
economic reform to boost national productivity.
"It's the day where we set the agenda for a new national reform agenda," he said.
"There is relentless competition internationally.
"That is not going to stop. We need to be more competitive, use the capacity of our

Nothing stops her worry of illness
Q. I'm a hypochondriac. I've tried everything, including psychotherapy, to make my concerns go away, but I keep being terrified.
Right now, because I often have headaches, I'm afraid I have a brain tumor, even though I've had head scans done and nothing is wrong.
What can I do?
A. In true hypochondriacs (who are equally split among men and women, by the way), even mild physical sensations — a fleeting chest pain, a plain-vanilla headache — feel like warnings of something terminal.
The Internet likely has made it worse. The vast array of websites listing symptoms and diagnoses sometimes can make even the healthiest people feel like they're teetering at the edge of their grave.
Extreme health anxiety is no joke. Hypochondria, like other anxiety disorders, can be disabling, and ordinary psychotherapy, constant reassurance from your doctor or medications may not be effective.
But there's one proven anxiety treatment that almost always helps: cognitive behavioral therapy. This short-term treatment helps you identify and challenge the thoughts that underlie your fears and emotions.
After a few sessions with a therapist experienced in its behavior-modifying techniques, most hypochondriacs find that the frightening feelings start to fade away — and, with a couple of painkillers, so does the headache.
Q. I love gardening but have horrible allergies. What can I plant that won't make me sneeze?
A. Well, sneezeweed is probably out. In fact, any plant that produces pollen (trees, shrubs, grass, flowers ... pretty much everything) has the potential to give you itchy, watery eyes, a drippy nose and sneezing fits.
Still, before you start contemplating AstroTurf, some pretty plants are less likely to send your nose into a tizzy.
These include florist-style hybrid tea roses (they're almost scentless), old-fashioned pom-pom hydrangeas, hollyhocks, sedum and irises.
Avoid heavily perfumed plants and male trees and shrubs (a greenhouse can help you choose). Female plants not only don't shed pollen, they trap and keep the pollen that's in the air, so less reaches your nose.
There also are some new allergy-free Bermuda grasses. Your local Cooperative Extension Service (find it here: www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/) can help you create a low-allergy landscape.
Wind-borne pollen still is a problem, but there are some preventive steps that will help. Try wearing a filtering mask, sunglasses, gloves and a hat. When you come in from the north 40, always shower, wash your hair, and strip down to eliminate pollen from your hair, skin and clothes, which go straight to the laundry.
And take non-sedating antihistamines faithfully during your allergy season (spring and fall are usually flora's time for sex orgies).

Winners Internet Network, Inc. Announces Status of Form 10 Registration Statement.
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 13, 1999--
David C. Skinner, Jr., President and CEO of Winners Internet Network, Inc. (WINR) releases the following information in response to the inquiries with legal counsel concerning the status of filing WINR's Form 10 registration statement.
Many contacts have been received by WINR directly and/or through its public relations firm wanting to know the current status of this filing. WINR, in-turn, contacted its representatives who are handling this filing through to completion. A written response has been received by WINR in answer to its inquiries and the correspondence is quoted below verbatim:
"You have contacted this office regarding the status of the Form 10 registration statement for Winner's Internet Network, Inc. (the "Company"). We have received the Company's responses to our initial information requests and we are working to compile that information. Based on our current work load, and additional information required from other sources, we anticipate completing the Company's Form 10 by the end of October 1999, if not before.
"If we are successful in filing the Form 10 by October 1999, the registration statement will become effective within sixty days and the Company will be required to begin filing quarterly and annual reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission after that effective date. We hope this clarifies the status of the Company's Form 10."
To clarify, WINR's interpretation of the entire Form 10 filing procedure was slightly inaccurate. Legal counsel maintains that the disclosures and documentation necessary to file was received from WINR in a timely manner to complete the filing in October as scheduled. A final audit and additional paperwork required is in the process of being completed. However, previously released earnings and revenues are entirely accurate and the filing was not delayed for any reason other than miscommunication with legal counsel and WINR's regrets any issues this has caused with shareholders. WINR's is moving forward with this filing and the NASDAQ application in an expeditious manner and will keep the financial community abreast of the status of each of these.
Information contained in this news release other than historical information should be considered forward-looking and is subject to various risk factors and uncertainties. For instance, the strategies and operations of Winners Internet Network, Inc. involve risks of competition, changing market conditions, changes in laws and regulations affecting these industries and numerous other factors discussed in this release. Accordingly, actual results may differ materially from those in any forward-looking statements.

ONLINE: Advertisers get measure of online video habits.(Brief article)
By Lara O'Reilly
Nielsen has unveiled the first industry-endorsed tool to measure online video viewing on home and office computers by audience size, demographic, location and the time spent watching streams.
It is claimed the VideoCensus tool will help advertisers target particular demographics by offering information about the types of sites and genres certain age groups prefer and the average times of day they watch video.
Brands including Unilever, Marks & Spencer and Yahoo! have all championed video content as the key to building online engagement with consumers in recent months.
Nielsen says 26.9 million people in the UK viewed video streams from home or work computers in April 2011.
Men view 78% more online video than women, according to the first set of figures released from Nielsen's VideoCensus. Of the 10 most popular sites for viewing video content online, only ITV and Channel 4 had more content viewed by women. YouTube is the highest ranked site overall.
VideoCensus is accredited by the UK Online Measurement Company, which is run by the Association of Publishers and the Internet Advertising Bureau.
UKOM general manager James Smythe says VideoCensus is an important step forward in the understanding of online video audiences.
He adds: "To support the video on demand advertising model, the industry needs reliable people-centric measurement."

Four injured in iPad fight at Beijing Apple store.
Beijing: Four people were taken to hospital and a glass door smashed as a near-riot broke out at Beijing s top Apple store among crowds rushing to snap up the popular iPad 2 tablet computer, state press said Sunday.
Angry consumers began rushing the store on Saturday afternoon after a "foreign" Apple employee allegedly stepped into the crowd to push and beat people suspected of queue jumping, the Beijing News said.
After the employee retreated back into the store, a crowd of consumers smashed the glass front door and shoved security guards as they surged forward in anger over the alleged beatings, the report said.
Consumers have lined up for hours at Apple stores in Beijing and Shanghai since the iPad 2, the updated version of the tablet computer, went on sale in the world s biggest Internet market on Friday.
The store in Beijing s chic Sanlitun commercial district closed early Saturday because of the altercation, but according to a voice recording on the store s phone was open for business Sunday.
Apple officials were not immediately available for comment when telephoned by AFP.
Police were investigating the incident and have interviewed four people hospitalised with injuries, the Beijing News said.
Lines for the popular iPad 2 have grown so long that people have begun selling their places in the queue, while a secondary market has also developed with consumers reselling their tablet computers for profit after leaving the store, the report said.
Late Saturday, the store posted a notice saying that queue jumping and the unauthorised sales of Apple products would not be tolerated, the paper said.

Product Description:
Wolf Consulting offers five PC-based material optimization and planning software products to assist service centers with material planning and production for coils and sheets. SCOPE I coil planning software determines the optimal master coil sizes (widths) to purchase and maintain in inventory. By determining optimal longer-term coil sizes, it shows companies how to produce part blanks and slit coils with the least amount of scrap and with the fewest master coil sizes.
SCOPE II coil scheduling software determines the best way to slit daily production requirements from master coils by determining the best slitting patterns that minimize scrap loss and production costs. Slitting can be exported to shimless tooling software to then determine the setup tooling (knives, spacers, etc).
COMPASS III scheduling software determines the best way to shear daily production requirements for part blanks from master coils by determining the shearing patterns that minimize scrap loss and production costs.
COMPASS IV scheduling software determines the best way to shear daily production requirements for part blanks from master sheets by determining the shearing patterns that minimize scrap loss and production costs. Printed graphical shearing patterns eliminate cutting errors.
